Sig Sauer X5 Legion - Your first competitive shooting pistol
4th Apr 2023
Making the transition from shooting stationary paper targets in an indoor range lane to entering outdoor shooting competitions was like falling in love with the sport of shooting all over again. Having great gear isn't a requirement, or a substitute for training and practice, but it can certainly make your experience less frustrating.
In this article I will outline a cost effective and easy shooting pistol that will provide you with all of the opportunity to grow into scoring high in competitions.
Don't get me wrong. I'm always happy to be shooting at all. But my enjoyment level increased significantly when the experience became more challenging by adding movement, cover, and conditions against a timer.
As I post more videos of my personal training progress, more and more people I know start to show an interest in possibly joining the sport by asking what gun they should start with.
There are thousands of ways to answer that question, and people could argue over it till the end of time. But here is my answer:
Sig Sauer P320 XFIVE Legion $999.99
Highlights:
- Affordable Price
- Class flexibility
- comes Optic Ready
- Weighted Grip = Great Balance
- Great Iron Sights
- Crisp trigger with short reset
- Magazine capacity
- Holster Options
- 9mm
(At the time of this article 5/4/2023) This gun comes in at just under $1000.00 which, in relation to other competitive options, is a very affordable price when considering how well this gun ranks in competitions. For that price you get three 17 round magazines which will be a great start for your first competitions (unless your class allows for the sig 21rd extended mags sold separately)
This same gun can be configured to compete in 4 separate USPSA classes.
- As is, out of the box, the P320 XFIVE Legion is eligible to compete in the USPSA "Limited" class.
- If you take the mag well off, you can add a red dot optic and compete in the USPSA "Carry Optics" class.
- Or you can leave the mag well on and add a red dot optic in the USPSA "Limited Optics" and "Open" classes.
The first thing you will notice when you pick up this gun is how heavy it is. The Legion TXG polymer grip module is infused with tungsten to increase the overall weight of the gun to 43.5oz. This additional weight over the other P320 models balances the gun to reduce muzzle flip and felt recoil to allow for flatter shooting at speed.
The iron sights on this gun are highly visible, but narrow enough to allow for a competitive level accuracy. However, if you are shooting in a class that allows red dot optics, the removable rear sight plate reveals a mounting face for a wide variety of direct mount red dot optics like the Sig Romeo1Pro or aftermarket adapter plates for many others.
This gun comes with a skeletonized Sig trigger that reduces the weight of the trigger pull by 30% less than a typical P320 trigger. The reset is short and crisp, which will become even more noticeable when working on speeding up your shooting.
There is a very capable and comfortable mag well at the bottom of the grip that helps provide a larger opening to guide the magazine in when performing quick reloads while on the clock. However, the mag well is removable in case you want to shoot in a class that prohibits them like the USPSA "Carry Optics" class.
The magazines that come with the gun hold 17 rounds, but Sig makes 21 round magazines that are sold separately. I recommend getting at least 2 of the 21 round magazines for competition. The additional capacity could save you the time cost of an additional reload during a match. There are even some aftermarket companies that make +2 base pads to turn your 21 round magazines into 23 round magazines and still stay within the compliant overall length restriction for USPSA, which is even better.
The Sig P320 is one of the most popular platforms on the market so it has a huge aftermarket presence for accessories like holsters. So you will have a seemingly endless number of options when it comes to finding a holster that you like.
The ammo this gun uses is 9mm which is relatively inexpensive compared to some other ammo types, and comes in a wide array of options for different grain weights. You can try shooting 115gr, 124gr, and 147gr ammo weights to see which feels the most controllable for you. Having the gun chambered in a caliber that is readily available, relatively inexpensive, and has lots of options is a relief.
If you are looking to get into shooting as a sport, and you are not sure that you will like it enough to make a major investment yet, the Sig Sauer XFIVE Legion is a wise way to to start. You get a class winning gun for an entry level price, and the shooting experience is enjoyable in itself.
