Build Recipe 29 - 14.5" 5.56 Spear LT DMR
11th Nov 2024
I (Clay) built this gun out for myself to see if I could replace 2 of my existing AR's with this 1 gun as a reasonable balance between distance accuracy and close quarters speed.
This gun started its life out as a 16" Spear LT chambered in 5.56 and I had it cut down to 14.5" and had a Surefire muzzle brake pinned and welded on so its overall length is 16" including the muzzle brake. This allowed the suppressor to be almost completly flush with the hand guard while installed.
My goal with this gun was to have something that could be effective enough at distance, but also easily maneuverable in stages with closer shots in tighter quarters.
The Gun
The Optics
The optics setup for this gun is one that I have grown comfortable with over time for quickly transitioning between near and far targets without having to move my hands from shooting position. I naturally run the stock of the gun in the meat of my chest as opposed to out by my shoulder or half way up my collar bone. This position makes it comfortable for me to use the ACRO as a primary optic when taking shots inside of 100 yards. And then transitioning to the LPVO for longer shots can be done without having to take my hands off the gun to flip a magnifier or adjust magnification on the LPVO.
I like the ACRO as my 1x for this setup because it is small, light, mounts on top of the LPVO mount, it' s durable and is basically weatherproof.
I like the EOTECH Vudu 1-10x because the glass is clear, I find the eye relief forgiving, and the reticle is extremely useful for distance shooting.
The Suppressor
I have always loved the Surefire RC2 suppressor that I had on my Sig Virtus and this time around I decided to try out their new RC3 low back pressure suppressor. Because of how the Surefire fast attach system works, the muzzle device is long enogh that it allowed me to cut the barrel shorter and pin and weld the muzzle device on which kept it at 16" over all length, but brings the suppressor back against the hand guard.
Controls
As for the controls, I went with the Radian Raptor charging handle and Radian Talon safety selector switch. These are not critical pieces, but they do definitely make the gun easier to manipulate quickly.
The trigger I prefer is the Timney AR PRO. It drops right in to the MCX and it's very light, very short, and very fast.
The Stock
The folding stock that comes on the 16" Spear LT is great at keeping the gun slim while folded, but the length of pull felt too short for me (I am 6'1") so I replaced it with a JMAC butt stock adapter, and my favorite butt stock, the B5 Systems SOPMOD. Now I will say, this stock is so wide that it will no longer fold slim against the gun like the Sig stock will. But it is much more comfortable to shoot.
